Not a chorale in the strict sense, Yeston’s shimmering score for TITANIC has a sort of sacral fervor nonetheless. And, as has been noted by many, it’s ravishingly rendered here by a company of preeminent singing actors the likes of which make New York the crucible of performing talent that it is. Yeston and Stone had the formidable task of musicalizing a vast and terrible account. TITANIC is a model of musical narrative economy; it deftly sketches a number of characters in the service of telling a larger story about the hope and hubris that innovation can generate. It’s thrilling because it has an amplitude of both purpose and feeling. I don’t know if a greater version of this material is possible. It turns out that TITANIC is an even better show without the boat. Heartbreak—and gorgeous music—is spectacle enough.
