VIOLET... I think that first cast album just sounds cheap and awful.
I know they probably had no money. But man. I really think that fantastic cast deserved better.
from around that same time, as a contrast, I remember how THRILLED I was that when the RENT cast recording came out, it sounded so freaking fantastic. I remember how much notoriety it got for being a Broadway cast recording that wasn't engineered and produced by musical theatre people, but by Arif Mardin, who had produced albums for Donny Hathaway, Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, and others.
