Advice for Tony winners: Stop reading from notes

Yes, I understand it's a pressure-filled moment. Yes, I understand that you don't want to miss thanking important people.

The TV-viewing public loves spontaneous moments on award shows--show surprise, humility, and graciousness.

When winners take out notes, the whole affair immediately loses energy. It doesn't translate well on TV screens. That's exactly why all the speeches seemed so boring yesterday. (Nothing is worse than, "I didn't think I had a chance to win!! Oh, let me get my note out...)

Plus, it's silly especially when actors do it. They're actors--their whole professional lives revolve around memorizing lines.
