Yes, Cariou was weirdly young and I'm trying to imagine the hunt to find a 10-year old to play Anne opposite the 34-year old Cariou LOL. I think we have talked about this but I still think a 59-year old Alfred Drake would have been a wonderful Frederik.

This is a 180º turn but thinking about Cariou, I was watching the 1979 Tonys tonight and wondered if you had any insight into why they did not do " A Little Priest" or even "By the Sea" for SWEENEY? The oddness of Lansbury lip-synching "Worst Pies" with an extra was just so...well, odd. I can understand Cariou not wanting to be a silent partner in"Worst Pies" but were they thinking that "A Little Priest" was something of a spoiler? By the time of the Tonys, didn't everyone know what the basic plot was?

Cariou was of course there and sang "Manhattan" (minus the first line) in tribute to Richard Rodgers. (An odd choice given I can't think of a single time he did an R&eitherH show.) And re. the lip synching, Lansbury sounded vocally fine in her acceptance speech. It's not that bad, I admit, and I know there was more lip synching back then there is today.

Back to ALNM...

If she'd been good, CZJ in the Trevor Nunn revival was sort of perfect casting, with the requisite flair and glamour in spades. (I'm sad that a TfL strike scotched my ability to make my matinée at the Menier so I never got to see Hannah Waddingham.)

I missed DEAD MAN WALKING so I haven't seen Susan Graham. I'll be curious to hear how it all comes together!
