Yes, he would've been too old, but I still want to hear those songs sung with his rich voice and peerlessly witty and intelligent phrasing. Drake as Ben Stone, Frederik Egerman and Benjamin Barker would be terrific.
I'm not sure "A Little Priest" would have been any longer than the same broadcast's excerpt from"They're Playing Our Song", although I do enjoy that song itself and Robert Klein's idiosyncratic performance and Lucie Arnaz's determinedly straight performance. Both are really fun and, as always, I marvel that she didn't have more of a musical theater career on Broadway. (When I was a kid I saw her Annie Oakley at Jones Beach- right before THEY'RE PLAYING OUT SONG, I think- and she was marvellous.)
I suppose we can still ask Len why he didn't do the number. |
