If Cariou was young, Drake would have been a little old, although I'm sure he would have acted and sung it well. They seem to have seen Desiree as the role for which they wanted a name. Prince supposedly said no to the idea a few years later when Drake was suggested for Oscar Jaffee, a role for which he would have been perfect, but perhaps older than Prince wanted.

I think "A Little Priest," apart from being very long, as Wayman said, would not have worked out of context. I do think it would have needed explanation, and the explanation itself would have taken a while.

It certainly is odd, though, that Cariou wasn't there for "Worst Pies," and that it was lipsynched. Lipsynching was rare then except for some of the numbers in 1971. I've been told that in fact everyone did their numbers live in 1971, but things had also been pre-recorded (except Mostel, who refused) for safety, and that the performers didn't even know when they were doing it that audiences at home were hearing the pre-recorded audio. The network made these decisions last minute. I don't know if this is true, but someone told me this once.

Oddly, in reviews of the 1971 telecast at the time, no one in any review I've found mentions the lipsynching, making me wonder if it was less obvious on televisions back then than it is to us now.
