Should we just assume leads won’t be present?

I’ve gone to a few musical where a lead was out: Sweeney, Merrily, and, yesterday, The Wiz, where three major players were out (Dorothy, Wicked Witch, Addaperle—particularly disappointing because I had been reading that both the standard Dorothy and Wicked Witch are apparently really wonderful).

People pay hundreds of dollars for tickets and plan months in advance. What are the chances that so many actors actors sick simultaneously—the pandemic is over afterall.

What are leave rules in a standard contract? Are actors allowed a certain number of performances off?

Were the Wiz actors out because none got Tony nominations so don’t have to be present when voters see the show? Will Lindsay Mendez suddenly be available for all Merrily performances because she was nominated?
