I wonder if NYC has CABARET fatigue. The Mendes/Marshall production ran for about six years from 1998-2004 and then came back again for another year from 2014-2015. I've heard multiple people say that if you've seen the Mendes/Marshall production, this new production seems superfluous and unnecessary.

The Mendes production (before Marshall was involved) had a fairly short life in London, but was a zeitgeisty blockbuster in New York, apparently, the way that the current production has been in London. Alan Cumming even got to host SNL due to his star-making turn as the Emcee, something that may be a singular achievement for a performer in a Broadway show.

Perhaps New York audiences just aren't ready for another production, especially one that doesn't have anything particularly new to say if one has seen the previous revival.

I'm wondering if there might be an audience for a revival of the original Hal Prince production and script. Would that even work in the 21st Century?
