The Misanthrope Last Night - Red Bull Theater

Last night's reading of Moliere's The Misanthrope, a Red Bull Theater production, was a disappointment. First of all, they had updated the play which I hadn't realized. I was looking forward to the original French text (translated of course). Secondly, where was Reg Rogers? And thirdly, Peter Sarsgaard played the lead and was the weakest player in the show. All of the rest of the cast showed up with fully fleshed out characters despite it being a reading and holding a script. It seemed as though Peter had read through the play only once and really didn't put his heart into the role or the production. He coasted through, stumbling over his words, posturing his demeaner. I love him as an actor for the most part, but what happened here? A good lesson for anyone involved in a reading - show up to the table with a commitment to the project and time spent on the script. Perhaps there is an underlying reason why he couldn't bring his all - it happens to the best of us. He did not fill in for Reg Rogers as both of them are in the press release for the show.
