This is how the reading was described online and in the press: "British playwright and operatic librettist Martin Crimp’s bold rewriting of Molière’s immortal satire brings the play into a modern London world of media celebrity. Perpetually disenchanted Alceste is in love with the lovely, if frivolous, Jennifer (Célimène in the original). As he turns his pen against the polite society surrounding them both, Alceste still hopes Jennifer will run away with him—but she’s got other ideas. Crimp’s savage blank verse brings the language to biting new life in this new staged reading from Red Bull Theater." It is very clear about what Mr Crimnp's version is. I saw its original 2009 production in London, starring Damian Lewis and Keira Knightley, and it was quict wonderful. |
