This adaptation by Martin Crimp played off-Broadway at the CSC in 1998 and provided a New York stage debut for Uma Thurman. I thought Uma did well but the adaptation turned Celimene into an unmarried young American movie actress studying acting in London. This turned a sophisticated, aristocratic, somewhat decadent insider character into an ingenue abroad. Critics in the local papers said that Thurman failed to capture the character whereas the fault was with Crimp. I thought Thurman looked fantastic, had a very good speaking voice for the stage, was natural and charming and moved well. Roger Rees came off best (as he almost always did) despite the rotten rewrite. I saw Thurman again in her next venture on the stage - "The Parisian Woman" on Broadway. She was nowhere near as good. Blair Brown in their one scene together mopped the stage with her. BTW: this was another modernized adaptation of an old French play. Marlo Manners (Lady Barrington) |
