It's fascinating. Granted, the two productions are 30 years apart but... for someone who is considered such an expert in musical comedy, it's fascinating that he did such legendary work with Guys & Dolls (and, as far as most are concerned, Forum and Anything Goes), but his Music Man was so misguided. I mean, even consider that he did such great work with Hello Dolly only 5 years before Music Man. In fact the majority of his career timeline is littered with productions that fell flat or were mediocre and just good enough, but for 10 years specifically, from 1986 to 1996, he was absolutely on fire as one of the best directors of musicals and plays, and such a variety of them too.

His golden decade:
The House of Blue Leaves - original, LCT
The Front Page - LCT revival
Anything Goes - LCT revival
Lend Me A Tenor - original
Six Degree of Separation - original, LCT
Guys & Dolls - revival
Laughter on the 23rd Floor - revival
Smokey Joe's Cafe - original
A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum - revival

--- I mean... absolutely incredible run.

Since then it has been a very mixed bag at best. He's still had some adored and acclaimed productions scattered throughout, any one of which would make any director one of the top. But it's suffocated with so much mediocre material in mediocre productions by him... it's really hard to know what to think of him as a director after 1996.
