| A parody then, a parable now? Think THE THREEPENNY OPERA, THE CRADLE WILL ROCK and even ANYONE CAN WHISTLE (!) aped and you get the gist of URINETOWN. A well done—somewhat mottled sound design excepted—revival of a show that I remember seeing originally but didn’t much remember otherwise. Seeing it again, I understood why I didn’t remember it the first time around: the wink wink meta fest was—and remains—a bit tedious. URINETOWN is clever enough, but it’s cloying, too. Your mileage may vary, but for me the show’s basically an extended, if well executed, hit over the head. | |
