Attended the final dress last night, the first public preview is tonight. I think the show is 90% great. It goes without saying that Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga are wonderful; the rest of the cast, including Beth Leavel, Gavin Lee and Kevin Early, deliver solid performances. The show is a very loving tribute--there are some moments that can move the audience to tears and then there are some great laughs. Much of Sondheim's humor is featured. Highlights for me were the "Broadway Baby" sequence, "Sunday in the Park With George", the "West Side Story" quintet and "Loving You" from "Passion". The show is a series of short-ish segments devoted to individual shows with two or three songs featured from most shows; then there are also moments when a song is sung on its own, separated out from its show. Most songs worked spectacularly well (especially in the first act) and there was a great deal of vocal power and finesse on the stage. There were a few numbers that conceptually didn't work for me or where the performer pushed a little too hard, but those are minor quibbles on a show that is lovingly constructed in memory of this great composer. I'll be seeing it at least one more time, just to luxuriate in the many highlights. | |
