After listening to Peter Filichia's rave review on Broadway Radio I picked up a copy of Dan Elish's new novel "King of Broadway." I just finished reading it and wanted to echo Peter's praise. It's a hilarious imagining of adapting his novel "The Worldwide Dessert Contest" into a musical. And who better to collaborate on a musical with than Horatio King - a legendary composer in the crusty mold of Sondheim. The book deliciously chronicles, while also poking fun at, the making of a musical from workshops, rewrites, choosing a director, working with a dramaturg, casting, and even merchandising. And I love that he has incorporated many clever original lyrics throughout, including a most interesting rhyme for chocolate. Dan Elish co-wrote the book for the musical "13" which I think deserved a much longer run on Broadway. Many years ago I auditioned to get into the BMI workshop as a lyricist but didn't get in. I always wondered what it would be like to be in that room where songs are presented for the first time and critiqued. The book captures those moments so well. Those who regularly post here, and in other theatre chat rooms, will take delight in some of the screen names that Dan Elish has conjured up. Perhaps you can even see yourself in one of the many memorable monikers. The book is so much fun to read and if you're a theatre loving nerd like me, I know you will devour it. It makes me wish that someone would turn "King of Broadway" into a musical. It has all the right ingredients. |
