This was released in 2019, the year before he died but I was only recently able to see it (it's on Netflix now). Along with fine performances by Hong Chau as Cathy and Lucas Jaye (I didn't much care for Christine Ebersole's performance, whether as actor or as written or directed), Dennehy delivers a stellar one. It's a poignant story of a mother and son who move in, temporarily, next door to a widower. The boy and Dennehy's character really bond, and Dennehy's final monologue of advice is so touching and so affecting, maybe even profound, I got teary-eyed. I only saw him on stage once, in the devastating revival of Death of a Salesman, which was life-changing for me, having only just started seeing Broadway shows, and giving me (along with Elizabeth Franz's stunning turn) a benchmark that few shows I've seen since could match. |
