I saw the Purchase production and have never been persuaded by the argument that it was a "workshop." It was a fully mounted production, with sets and costumes, starring well-known actors and charging full price to a paying audience. Should it have been closed to critics simply because the producers had greater ambitions for it down the line? As your post astutely points out, Rich's initial negative assessment of the show probably contributed to its long-term success -- there is often no better medicine for a show in development than putting it in front of a neutral audience and getting their honest opinion. |
