This rang slightly false to me, so I went back to the NYT article on the company closing.

The producing director is quoted as saying he "overestimated the box-office income and undercapitalized the operation. The size of our audience could only support workshops or small musicals, which was contrary to our mission [of doing full Broadway-scale productions]." The article notes that box-office receipts for Kiss of the Spider Woman were only 40 percent of the expected total, and that while box-office projections were based on what larger regional theatres did in their first seasons, Spider Woman did only about half that. The official closing statement said that "based on this experience, the revised revenue forecasts indicated that the venture could not afford to continue."
