| Musical theater, starting with opera, have always relied on source material. People went to the opera but in the 18th and 19th Century because the wanted to see the musical version of their favorite novel or play, whether that is "Hamlet" or "Manon." Today, many novels and plays do not have the necessary romantic realism that translates to the musical theater. Movies do have that romantic realism. |
