I think the turning point was The Producers, and maybe Hairspray. After their success, film studios started combing their IPs for movies they could turn into musicals. Basically looking to make money off of their recognizable properties and banking on people's love for the films to turn into box office success. This crass commercialism is different from artists being inspired by an existing film to make a musical (A Little Night Music was not created because of the popularity of Smiles of a Summer Night).
