The list of the top 25 longest running shows doesn't have a monopoly on success. That list represents (for the most part) recent productions, as mega runs started mainly in the 1980s. Shows can still be incredibly successful without making it into the list. Take The Producers, La Cage Aux Folles, Kinky Boots, Moulin Rouge and Spamalot, to name a few. Show me one person who wouldn't invest in these shows if they could go back in time. And to answer your question - I think the it is obvious. Besides the fact that you already have the bones and structure for a potential good book when you base your show on a successful movie, the brand recognition - the IP - really cuts through the clutter and does a lot of the marketing work. If the show doesn't deliver, that's on the creators. But a musical has a head start with finding an audience, if the audience already has some emotional attachment to it. And beloved movies give you exactly that. So it's not about the success ratio. If you have a great IP and you think you have the right writers that are passionate about the project and inspired by it, you're definitely starting ahead. |
