“In The Leaves” - from Redwood

The producers of Redwood have decided this is the song they wanna come out of the gate with, promising the world the performance from Idina they are expecting. I haven’t seen the show. I can only comment on my reaction to the music and lyrics. I am reminded of modern evangelical churches populated primarily by America’s youth. There is a kind of pop sound where it feels melodic, but in the end, it’s actually just numbing. In churches, there is a purpose for this, but on a Broadway stage it feels totally out of sync with the needs of drama or character. The lyrics reminded me of the best of “Tammy Faye.” Enough said there. I’m really looking forward to seeing the show, and hope everyone is employed for a very long time. This is a passion project, and no one can ever take that away from the star. Boy oh boy was this a strange beginning for me.
