| Chu is a brilliant director (who made a Wicked movie i didn't love)... but he absolutely did not "coordinate all that"... He and about 25-50+ producers, coordinators, managers, department heads and visionary artists responsible for creating and executing the cinematography, production design, costume design, lighting design, everything... coordinated all that, working under and to serve his vision or his word as creative head of the movie (which can sometimes mean he dreams it up and someone makes exactly what he says, or can mean they talk with him about ideas and intentions and themes and then they create stuff and bring him choices and he chooses things from what they thought of, or in between). I don't think in propping him up to balance his lack of nomination you need to talk as if he I also think it's very disingenuous to compare the box office success of a movie of one of the most successful musicals ever made that is still very very very popular and currently still running and touring VERY successfully, which has a tone and subject matter and story and cultural reference/touchstone that is much more accessible and popular than almost any other musical, to movies that each have much different and harder hills to climb. I think a better movie could have been made of Wicked, and i think many many worse movies of it could have been made. But I also think that unless it got messed up in a big way, it would have sold a lot of tickets. Even a perfect movie of The Color Purple musical never had a shot at a fraction of the popularity or mass audience success as Wicked has, a perfect DEH or Cats movie also have much bigger obstacles. Anyway, Chu is a fantastic talent. And his movie got a Best Picture nomination which is a nom for him too. |
