Just because someone says: ''I think X should have been nominated,'' I don't think they're obligated to say who should've been kicked out instead. But since you asked, I'll make this exception. And I'll preface by saying I haven't seen ''The Substance'' yet, so I can't judge Coralie Fargeat's work. But I have seen the other 4. Granted, it's purely subjective, but I'm not the biggest fan of ''Anora'' or ''The Brutalist,'' both of which I find overrated. Sometimes, I compare the degree of difficulty. I could easily imagine Chu directing a comedy, like ''Anora,'' or a drama, like ''The Brutalist,'' but I can't imagine Baker or Corbet pulling off a blockbuster musical, like ''Wicked.'' With its 10 Oscar nominations, Chu coordinated all that. A musical has so many more moving parts, and is a much tougher task. Just witness the big-screen musical flops of ''Cats,'' ''Dear Evan Hansen,'' ''The Color Purple,'' etc. By contrast, ''Wicked'' has grossed over $700 million worldwide & become the highest-grossing movie based on a B'way musical. That's quite an achievement! |
