I was working the show at the time so I saw many performances during previews right til closing. Now, I understand that the show went through MAJOR changes (including cast changes, director changes, lyricist changes) all out of town. What finally emerged on Broadway was pleasant enough and certainly professional looking - -but was rather lackluster. I agree with the later posting in this thread that George Hearn had too little to do. I believe up that time, he was basically unknown - and his major solo made for a wonderful vocal introduction to his musical side. Liv Ullman tried hard, was charming, but seemed uncomfortable in the musical numbers. The rest of the cast did their best in smaller roles. Maureen Silliman (a last minute addition) was charming and a welcome presence. George S. Irving was (as someone in another post suggested) George S. Irving. But still wonderful. A charming, enjoyable evening -- but rather dull. |
