I agree it would make no sense, but there is a semi-precedent for this. In 2009, Roundabout's After Miss Julie by Patrick Marber was ruled a revival, even though this was its American premiere and the play was definitely not "in the popular repertoire." The supposed reasoning was that this was a revival of Miss Julie, although it made absolutely no sense. The play was based on Strindberg's Miss Julie but there were substantial differences, and the show was described on the title page as "After Miss Julie: a version of Strindberg's Miss Julie by Patrick Marber," with Patrick Marber on his own line and in larger type than Strindberg's name, and his Playbill bio described him as "Playwright." (Strindberg's Playbill bio is listed as "Author of Miss Julie.") I am sure that Roundabout's asking for After Miss Julie to be a revival was a maneuver to get a Tony nomination for a lukewarm production, and it should have been turned down. Calling "The Picture of Dorian Gray" a revival would be even more out-there than the After Miss Julie designation, but I could see an attempt being made. Interestingly, the official listing of authorship is "by Oscar Wilde, adapted and directed by Kip Williams," although Wilde never wrote a play version of his novel. An attempt to designate Dorian Gray as a revival should be turned down, if it were ever to be made, but logic and Tony rulings don't always go together. (As I said before, asking for Dorian Gray to be a revival would be risky anyway, so the producers probably would not ask. But Othello and Glengarry Glen Ross are both opening within a few days of Dorian Gray, and if one or both are getting very negative buzz, I could see the producers making the attempt.) |
