There is plenty of research about how trigger warnings - especially in a setting like the one described - don’t do anything useful and may actually have negative effects. And not just for people trying to avoid spoilers, but for the very people they are intended to help.
The idea of trigger warnings arose from mental health practices and has since become warped for various reasons. This is not to say the initial concept isn’t still useful - but the example here shows just how distorted they have become in the hands of people who have no mental health training. And to argue that it doesn’t matter because ‘they don’t hurt anyone’ isn’t actually supported by the science. |
