I want to personally thank the clever clogs who pared this footage of Anita Bryant with 'No One Mourns the Wicked' from (of course) Wicked. For those who missed it, news broke today that Anita Bryant, the former pageant queen, D-list pop singer, Florida Citrus Commission spokeswoman and virulent anti-Gay rights crusader died at the overripe age of 84, back in December. Bryant, unfortunately, recorded several Broadway standards, including on her debut album, for which she had a modest hit with a cover of "Till There Was You" from The Music Man. Her cultural relevancy was well before my time, but do any of you have any recollections of if/how the theatre community mocked or parodied her in the 70s and 80s? And, please don't come for me about showing the old hag some grace. I won't tolerate her intolerance. To paraphrase Bette Davis, "You should never say bad things about the dead, you should only say good… Anita Bryant is dead. Good" |
