I cannot answer for Bryant's knowledge of any particular person's sexuality but she was not unaware of the many LGBTQ persons in show business including many with whom she worked. She also had been a houseguest on more than one occasion in the Pines on Fire Island. It was the passing of a law in Florida which (rightfully) outlawed discrimination against schoolteachers based on their sexuality that set her upon her harridan ways (that and much encouragement from her supposedly Christian husband/manager) I do recall I stage managed a fundraising benefit at Les Mouches Nightclub/ Disco in New York to fight her actions in Florida. Many Broadway performers and disco performers appeared (many did not want to get involved) The performers included Blossom Dearie, Estelle Parsons and Louis St.Louis. It was at this benefit that Julie Budd introduced a new song from an upcoming motion picture called "New York, New York" Some other performer who was in the motion picture actually made that song famous but Julie sang it in public first. | |
