Bailey's surprise nomination just shows how much the SAG nominators loved ''Wicked.'' (I thought he stole the movie, so I'm happy for Bailey.) With its record-tying 5 SAG nominations, ''Wicked'' is now the odd's-on-favorite to win Outstanding Cast (which sometimes also wins Oscar's Best Picture). But on the same day, ''Wicked's'' Jon M. Chu missed the cut at Directors Guild of America, which nominated Audiard, Baker, Berger, Corbet & Mangold. As for who's ''far more deserving'' than Bailey for SAG, it's subjective. The SAG nominators DID nominate Adrien Brody for ''The Brutalist'' and Colman Domingo for ''Sing Sing,'' so they must've seen Guy Pearce and Clarence Maclin in those movies. And SAG DID nominate Strong for ''The Apprentice'' (but not Sebastian Stan as Trump). ''The Brutalist,'' which won 3 Golden Globes, really underperformed at SAG, missing Felicity Jones, Pearce and Outstanding Cast. SPOILER ALERT!: Elsewhere, I'm relieved that the SAG nominators were not so starstruck that they nominated Isabella Rossellini for ''Conclave.'' One report said she's got 7 minutes of screen time as Sister Agnes, but I don't believe it. She is seen skulking about, but she's got few lines. It's an overrated cameo. Which brings me to my other gripe with the SAG nominations for Outstanding Cast. Carlos Diehs plays a pivotal role in ''Conclave,'' and easily has more screen time and dialogue than Rossellini, but isn't part of the Cast nomination (ostensibly due to his billing; he's not a star, like Rossellini). Boo! |
