If we get more WICKED films, I imagine that, as with the stage musical and these first two movies, Gregory Maguire's books will likely be ignored in favor of original stories. It's a shame, because Maguire's Oz books would be a terrific basis for a fantasy series, but the story of the musical veers so sharply from the first book that I'm not sure it's even possible to incorporate them. In any case, Elphaba is really most sincerely dead at the end of the book and does not appear in any of the subsequent novels. Glinda does appear in a later novel, although she is not the focus of that book.
The second book focuses on a character who is likely the son of Elphaba and Fiyero, the third centers the Lion, and the fourth (I think) centers a girl who, if I remember correctly, is the daughter of the character from Book 2, thus Elphaba and Fiyero's grandchild.
Would fans of the musical be interested in stories that don't feature the beloved characters they already know? It's a good question. |
