I've heard it said that Wicked's foreign grosses are not as high as one might think because The Wizard of Oz is universally beloved in the US/Canada/UK/Australia/New Zealand, and the connection of Wicked to The Wizard of Oz makes it attractive to audience segments who may not be that interested otherwise. But The Wizard of Oz doesn't hold the same status in the rest of the world.
