I’ve heard this mentioned many times. My husband is from Spain and has said that, while Spaniards know the 1939 movie, it’s not a beloved classic as in many English-speaking countries. He thought the original attempt to produce Wicked in Madrid back in 2019 was going to flop. The production was shelved after initial auditions, and I don’t know if the lack of knowledge of the original film played a part in the cancellation. I think the new movie will change that.

I also have friends in Germany who mentioned the same phenomenon when the original German production (which played in Stuttgart and Oberhausen) underperformed. Even the recent non-replica version that played Hamburg was a disappointment for the producer, Stage Entertainment. It was also unsuccessful in the Netherlands and the Czech Republic. I’m not fully sure of how the show played in Finland and Denmark as the producing theatres have a wholly different business model than the other commercial productions.
