I saw it. I had no issue with the subject matter. In fact, the subject matter was one of the things I was most interested in it for/by. It was the way it was done that was my issue. Yes, the songs were fine. Some were beautiful, some were meh, a lot of them blended together to sound like the same thing. There are other Avett songs I know that would have fit and bit much more dramatic emotionally or musically, and stood out... and I don't know their work well. But the problem for me was both the songs they chose and the play written for them to live in, and how they lived in it. The subject was the least of the reasons it didn't gel or move me.
If you'd told me this was directed and developed by a veteran musical theater maker, and written by a veteran playwright who loves musicals, I wouldn't believe you based on what I saw. But I know both are true. |
