There is currently a pneumonia variation making people ill throughout the nation. It’s hard to push through a performance when you can’t get a full breath. This comment written by someone who pushed through the symptoms and went to work…resulting in a lung infection. A drain being installed and two weeks in hospital. That was early November. Doctors said that my breathing should be back to normal in a few more weeks. I'm keeping you in my thoughts as you recover. I went through a less serious version of this, but I was hospitalized for a day and then my treatment continued with home care. As a music director in the last week of a regional run of Sponegbob, when I developed the cough that last week (I didn't know it was pneumonia yet), I could still work through it and I did. But the following week I started feeling fatigued, short of breath, etc. And I did miss work (including rehearsals for another show) for a week and a half after that as I was diagnosed, etc. But had I been an actor onstage, there's no way I could have done even that last week of Spongebob performances. I can't say for sure that pushing through that last week (I also had classes and other rehearsals during that time) was detrimental, but it may have been. I'm still dealing with the cough (which is very slowly subsiding), though otherwise I've been given a clean bill of health. I did my other show successfully, got back to my classes, and to my church gig (I've been able to sing as part of Xmas masses without the post-illness cough interrupting, thank god). But again, were I an onstage performer, I truly doubt I'd be going on right now. One of the doctors at the hospital said indeed he was seeing a lot of pneumonia recently - he used the word "rampant." And clearly this was not just about Boston. We don't know that anyone in the cast of Gypsy has pneumonia. But whatever it is and whoever is affected, we have to trust that it's severe enough to cause this week of cancellations. Yes, it's terrible for the people who bought tickets. But we also need some compassion. People may be seriously sick. Let's not just slough that off. Winters - I hope you are recovering as well as possible. |
