Stephen Schwartz's new ending to Act One somehow goes against the basic format of musicals -- in that Act One should end with something that will make the audiences WANT to come back for Act Two and see what happens. ("Meadowlark" with the Baker's wife deciding to leave the baker and run away with the young chauffeur fits that "end of Act One" concept very nicely. The new ending of Act One with the Baker getting drunk to avoid the truth (which he really does know but won't admit it) weakness the show...

Some examples of Perfect Act One endings::
West Side Story -- two murdered dead bodies left onstage with one of them being the brother of the leading female (Maria) and the murderer is the guy she loves (Tony).

Gypsy - Rose, having lost June, now focuses all her attention on her other daughter (Louise) whom she has been ignoring most of her life - promising that "Everything's Coming Up Roses". (including the magnificent lead-in line to the song "Finished? Why we're just beginning! And there's no stopping us this time!"

My Fair Lady -- At the ball, Henry Higgins allows Eliza to dance and chat with a man (Zolton Karparthy) who could reveal her true identity.

Brigadoon -- Harry Beaton runs away and tries to leave Brigadoon which will bring complete and utter destruction to the town and the people.

Camelot - King Arthur knights his close friend, Lancelot, but also knows that there is a "romance" brewing between Lancelot and the Queen but doesn't know what to do.

and many others...
