I think moving the Act I curtain of MFL was an atrocious error. (And not just because I played Karpathy in high school - my only stage appearance - 50 years ago.) Staged properly, i.e., as Lerner, Loewe, and Hart intended, Eliza and Karpathy are downstage center, talking animatedly, Pickering is stage left gesturing frantically to Higgins, and Higgins, at stage right, puts his hand up as if to say "Let's see what happens." Depicting the tension - not making us imagine what it might be - is the perfect ending to the act. |
