I saw Uggams in Gypsy at Connecticut Repertory Theatre in 2014, which performs at the University of Connecticut. Uggams was in her early 70s. She's the only Rose I've ever seen that didn't come down the aisle with "Sing Out, Louise!" I don't think she would have easily made it up the stairs. Her acting was fine, if subdued. She glared a lot. Her singing of the score was wonderful. Her's was more of a "park and bark" performance. There wasn't a lot of nuance, directorial concept, or acknowledgment of any kind of relationships (racial or otherwise) in that production.
