The discussions about the intentionality of a black woman playing Madame Rose reminded me that Ms. Uggams played the part regionally in 2014. I remember being really excited when that production happened because Leslie Uggams is such a charismatic powerhouse. Alas, I didn’t see it. I just spent time scoring YouTube for clips of her singing the role - to no avail.
Does anyone have remembrances of this performance? And, does anyone have access to audio or video of her in the role? Also, I’m curious if she played the role with race awareness or if it was more of a color-blind type of performance. Curious to hear more from any of you. |
