I am eager to see the current revival of "Gypsy." It is interesting to see how many reviewers have centered on the character of Rose, rather than the title character, Gypsy. Having seen some of the greats (Tyne Daly, Betty Buckley, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone), I feel that the best Roses have shared the stage with the best Louises. For instance, say what you want about the movie with Rosalind Russell, but Natalie Wood emerges as a star in Act II. Christa Moore opposite Tyne Daly? Not so much. Debbie Gibson opposite Betty Buckley? Almost. Tammy Blanchard opposite Bernadette Peters? Closer. Laura Benanti opposite Patti LuPone? A knockout. So here is my question: does anyone know why the creaters chose to title the musical, "Gypsy"? |
