In another reply of mine in this thread I go into why I think Gypsy applies very much and even more to Rose, with double wahmmy meaning since it seems to refer to her daughter AND is the actual stage name of that daughter, and the name of her autobiography. AND adding onto what I say in that other reply... I think there's an incredible dramatic irony/poetic justice that the musical is adapted from Louise's memoir, and titled Gypsy after her... but is all about her mother Rose. Anyone who knows the show can appreciate the irony and poetry of that. But I can wax all I want about what the writing of Gypsy (the musical) came to imbue into the meaning of the title Gypsy... the musical is titled Gypsy because when giving the rights, Gypsy Rose Lee insisted that the musical be called that, from the title of her memoir and her own stage name. So it wasn't a choice of the authors (who were not only contractually obligated to use that title, but were brought onto the project rather than creating it from scratch or optioning it themselves). And... why is Company not called Bobby? Why is Carousel not called The Barker? Why is Kiss of the Spider Woman called that when the Spider Woman herself has a smaller role than Aurora or Molina, whose story it is. |
