Carol Channing and Lauren Bacall sing delightfully in their respective films Thoroughly Modern Millie and To Have and Have Not; The Big Sleep. Lucille Ball sang memorably in the 1943 film DuBarry Was a Lady, the 1960 Broadway musical Wildcat, and (at times) on TV. Unfortunately, her singing voice was really shot by the time she was cast in the 1973 Mame film. It's painful to hear her try to talk-sing "If He Walked into My Life".
Ball is also badly miscast. In 1973 she could no longer pull off the sophistication that a character like Mame Dennis requires, especially after playing Lucy Ricardo (or variations) on TV for so many years. |
