I saw Maybe Happy Ending on Tues., 11/19. I agree that it is a very fine, even delightful musical with an enjoyable original score. Darren Criss is giving a heart-breaking performance that is worthy of Tony consideration. Helen J Shen, Dez Duron, and Marcus Choi are also quite good. The show is easily the best new Broadway musical I have seen this season. I just wish its weekly grosses were stronger. It has been running for 8 weeks, but for 6 of those weeks it's been bleeding dollars -- with losses as high as half a million per week. The last two weeks have been a big improvement with the week ending 12/01 at or slightly above break-even and last week near break-even or slightly below. It needs to do much, much better if it wants to last into spring. Hopefully that will happen. Fingers crossed. |
