Yes, it’s a lovely show. A bit over praised, perhaps, because it’s such a welcome relief from the loud jukebox musicals and movie adaptations that have inundated Broadway lately. The actors are wonderful, though, and Michael Arden’s direction is, well, just about perfect. I saw it last week from a discounted balcony seat for $69. When I got home, out of curiosity I looked at Telecharge and saw that most orchestra seats were priced at $311, $211, and $176 with service charge. The show is not selling because it’s priced too high. Most of the folks I sat with in the balcony — which was probably two-thirds full — looked to be in their mid-to-late teens or twenties. Lots of students, great to see. But they’re not going to be spending hundreds of dollars on theater tickets. I hope the producers are reaching out to colleges and cultivating that audience. It’s a young person's show, I think (though I am definitely not a young person), and many of my friends, who prefer more traditional Broadway dazzle, would probably be disappointed with this. I hope the producers can make the economics work. This show deserves a respectable Broadway run, but the climate just isn’t friendly.
