Elton John is not a good musical theatre composer.

Many would argue that The Lion King (which, notably, began as a film) is a great score. I feel otherwise, but, even if I were to concede it as well written, Tammy Faye and Lestat were disasters. Billy Elliott and Aida both have a couple of interesting songs, but each score, in its entirety, is uneven with less compelling music than music that is cloying, indistinctive and not specific to its characters.
