Over two days. Cult of Love: what a tremendous cast! It is a bit August: Osage County / God of Carnage / Shit. Meet. Fan. but at Christmas. And it's crazy pretty much from the start. There are a lot (too many for me) of songs, with the cast ably playing instruments and singing, which is fun, but if folky Christian Christmas tunes are not your thing (they're not mine) it's too much. A lot does happen, and it is very funny at times, as well as sad. The characters are interesting ones, though maybe too many interesting characters in one room at one time. And is anyone better off by the end? Overall, I would recommend it for a good price. I certainly came away happy that these are not my holiday memories. Oh, great set, too. Eureka Day: what a little joy. Great cast, interesting food-for-thought plot. If you didn't see it Off-Broadway, see it here (if you saw it Off-Broadway and think you'd like to see it again, yes, see it here - but some of the fun, I would think, is in things being new). SPOILERISH: oh, that last line. Swept Away: I've already said a lot. I had a nice second row mezz TDF ticket. Some things were confounding (why didn't they show the sailors doing any of that hard work - they sing and dance a lot, but otherwise, nothing is being done) and, yes, I didn't know about the plot turn, which kind of dampened my enthusiasm. Yes, some were going to die, but ... The score does more of a job on this one - and it is catchy, fun, illustrative, intricate, and worth the whole thing, in my opinion. Oh, but John Gallagher Jr. does even more of a job. So impressive in his work here, and he has a lot to do. It's amazing how much emotion he exudes, even with his face covered with hair. I'm very, very glad I saw this (before closing was announced). My touristy thing for the trip was the Secrets of Grand Central Terminal, which was very enjoyable, especially at a Black Friday half-price. It was pretty much all new to me. Other than that, cold. But it's even colder at home now. |
