I saw Lansbury in "Gypsy" three times -- twice at the Winter Garden and once at the Westchester Premier Theatre. (Does anyone remember it? The site is now a Stop n Shop.) If I recall correctly, the continued bowing after "Rose's Turn" was not in Lansbury's original Broadway run. And the response at the Westchester Premier Theatre was muted. It took a while for the audience to understand what was going on. I don't think there was any applause following it. (We had already applauded!) Gustave
P.S. I'm surprised at all the superlatives from this board for Lansbury's "Gypsy." I thought it was fine. And maybe it was the best acted. But, for my money, Merman gave the best performance. Her Act 1 closing gave me goosebumps. |
