Lansbury played the first two-thirds as a scheming, pushy stage mother, but never mean or crass. Then at that moment in the second act, she became ruthless when caged. It was a truly chilling experience, rarely matched in the theatre. Seeing Lansbury in Manchurian Candidate would give you an idea of how she did that moment, and carried on throughout to the end with all different kinds of complexities as well. |
