I was 22 when the Bernadette production played Broadway. I was just becoming a theater fan and wasn't too familiar with the "classics," unless there was a movie version... well, a movie version that was popular. Needless to say, I knew noting about Gypsy. :P And I wasn't one of those people who immersed myself with old cast recordings of yesteryear either (maybe if we had streaming then!), so I never heard a lick of the Ethel Merman version.

All this to say, the Bernadette production was my introduction to Gypsy. And I loved it!

Maybe it helped that I had no point of comparison, but I thought Bernadette was great. For what it's worth, I saw it towards the end of the run and had heard that she really grew into the role. I've since seen the Patti version (and finally listened to Ethel!) They're more brassy, obviously. I recall Bernadette's Rose being softer and sultrier. I guess people weren't used to that.

I admit that the score was the true star of the show for me. To this day it's still the version I prefer to listen to. I just love the arrangements.
