I enjoyed her overall presence, but I must have seen it during the illness becausse I remember thinking she didn't sound great (I am a big fan btw). I also remember being absolutely flabbergasted by the Tony performance which is one of the most thrilling of all time...and not at all representative of what I saw at the Shubert. I wonder if some people who bemoan her not winning the Tony are basing it on the award performance and not an actual performance of the show? I went to the show with a Tony voter, and if enough voters saw it when she was not in great voice, it's not so shocking she didn't win, right? And although she didn't work on Broadway again (I would guess due greatly to type, not lack of talent), Marissa was magical and Hairspray was a force of nature. For me there was never any doubt that Marissa would deservedly win the Tony. Bernadette is a Broadway legend, a titanic talent, highly regarded and awarded. I think it's ok that she didn't win a Tony for Gypsy, which by any objective measure was a controversial production with an inconsistent central performance. I am thrilled for the people who saw her a year in when she had "found" her Rose. LOL. Sorry I went so early.
